We look constantly (ads, net-listings, etc.) because we are searching for the elusive commodity of this twenty-first century consuming society - personal competence, historically known as craftsmanship. Fundamentally, these are individuals who define themselves by what they are able to do rather than what they are able to consume (purchase).
Theres always room for the competent person because there is always a To Do List greater than what we can collectively accomplish - at least this has been the case for over 25 years.
Our search centers around the twin As, Aptitude and Attitude. Aptitude, in this context, describes ones skill package and mental ability. Attitude generally describes the spirit in which the skills are applied to a task.
The Work Environment
Details, details, details..... The routine is in the process, not the specifics; therefore, a high degree of mental alertness is required. This is a thinking persons environment.
Organizationally, we have a decentralized decision process. We have to operate in this manner in order to do the volume we accomplish at the competitive prices we quote.
Moreover, we look at all phases of the business as a productive process that can be quantified to determine an efficiency factor and thereby monitor individual and team goal results. The objective is feedback on all activities.
Administrative objectives are organized by functional units. This allows us to build job descriptions around personalities rather than trying to squeeze the individual into a predetermined box.
We consider ourselves to be reasonably well organized, but administrative objectives are altered by shifting functional units of work between individuals, depending on competencies, work load, and individual preference.
Nevertheless, this is an uncomfortable environment for the bureaucratic personality.
