AestheticsThe issue of aesthetics is almost universally desirable, but notorious as the contributor to a step in costs. The aesthetic component of the evaluation can be separated into three areas, which can be utilized singly or in conjunction with one another. Shape Aesthetics:Generally, three dimensions are more pleasing than two in
freestanding structures. Something that has shape 360 degrees around is
preferable to just a façade. As a rule, a curved surface is perceived as more
desirable than a flat surface. Naturally proportion, and sometimes symmetry, have
to be addressed but a more complex shape, properly executed, is usually
perceived as more pleasing than a planar, rectilinear shape. There is a place
for flat, shapeless objects, but it is usually at the utilitarian end of the
scale. Finish Aesthetics:Finish is the color, texture, and overall surface appearance of an object.
Almost any color is preferable to concrete gray. Texture is three-dimensional
detail on the surface that creates depth and shadow detail; all of which is more
visually interesting than flat monochromatic surfaces. Natural stone, with all
of its organic blends of color and surface variation, is preferable to manmade
concrete. Concrete that looks like natural stone is preferable to concrete that
looks like concrete. Plant Aesthetics:Plants are natural. Plants are alive. Plants are integrative. Plants exceed
manmade objects in providing infinite variations in shape and finish detail.
Plants represent and are adapted to local conditions and micro-climates. Plants
are abundant and universally available. They can be large like trees and provide
shade or small like plants providing seasonal color. Plants are good.
