Mounting Instructions For
Stonewear Bollards
STONEWEAR Bollards are fabricated with a mixture of long-strand AR glass fiber and cement mortar. They are lightweight, hollow structures suitable for decorative use where movement control is required. Some designs are as decorative covers for actual steel or cast in place concrete bollards.
There are three mounting options that apply to most of the bollard designs:
1) Mounting For Decorative and Pedestrian Uses: This is most easily accomplished with a urethane based permanent adhesive. The adhesive has approximately 150 pounds of holding strength per square inch so in most cases several dabs around the perimeter is adequate. The adhesive approach has the advantages of being a blind type of fastening system which allows the attachment of two finished surfaces (bollard and deck) to be joined in a very economical manner.
If it becomes necessary to move the bollard, the adhesive can be cut mechanically by slipping a blade between the two surfaces and sawing or cutting through the adhesive (see STONEWEAR instructions on use of Sikaflex urethane adhesive for specific instructions.)
2) Weighted Base Non-Attachment Method: This method is applicable to designs which have a. broad base and a low profile. A specified weight can be achieved by backfilling the base or a portion of the bollard with concrete which makes them weigh several hundred pounds and it consequently inhibits unauthorized movement except by use of material handling equipment. This method has the benefit of allowing interim placement and has no installation cost associated with it. When this type of mounting method is specified a web sling is supplied with the unit which makes it easy to lift, move, and place.
3) Covering Real Physical Bollards: Confirm preferred design covers actual physical bollard (8" steel pipe is popular and will stop a 5000 lb. vehicle moving at 35 mph if it is installed 4' in the earth and allowed to rise 3')
Options:
Removable bollards with various sized steel pipe are available on request. If desired they can also be supplied with plates at ground level allowing a padlock or similar device to secure the removable bollard. Larger pipes require material handling equipment to move and store. For large holes, lightweight cast plugs can be supplied.
