An Architectural Quilt for Sacramento

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES

for the Sacramento County
Department of Systems and Data Processing Building

The artwork for the 799 G Street building is entitled "An Architectural Quilt for Sacramento." The quilt is about architecture. Its aim is to celebrate the historical character of Alkali Flat through a detail of Victorian architecture. Deeply rooted and prominent in the community, its reference sets up an anachronistic parallel as Victorian forms embedded in a contemporary structure are abstracted in a modern tradition.

The physical projection of the artwork from its ground will interact with both the effects of artificial and natural light and shadow forming transient patterns and contrasts. Thus, the value shifts will vary with the hour of the day, season of year and urban patina.

Visual continuity is emphatically stressed as the rectangular window shapes are echoed by the dimensions of the individual panels extending the pattern of repetition of the main level. Because the STONEWEAR facade adapts the same surface color and texture designated by the architects, it naturally integrates into the overall architecture.
